Planning permit or building permit?

Planning approval

Considers land use, development, neighbourhood character, siting, overlays and planning scheme controls. Usually administered by the local council or another responsible authority.

Building approval

Considers the safety, health, amenity, accessibility, structural and technical compliance of the proposed building work. Assessed by the appointed relevant building surveyor.

Where planning approval is required, the building permit must be consistent with the planning permit and endorsed documents.
